NSS-CDS Mentors/Guides

NSS-CDS Mentors/Guides

The NSS-CDS board of directors in conjunction with the NSS-CDS training committee is developing a list qualified cave divers who we feel are properly trained to act as guides and/or mentors for cave divers who want to dive with a guide or mentor.

This program was approved and added to the NSS-CDS Standards & procedures in July 2013. We will begin populating this list as soon as mentors are trained and certified.

Also please realize that all NSS-CDS instructors listed on the instructor listing are, by defintion qualified mentors/guides.

When you choose a mentor from this list we are representing that the mentor is properly trained not only in cave diving but also in supervising cave divers in the overhead environment.

Mentors are directed to abide by all the rules and guidelines that make cave diving a safe activity. You will no longer have to resort to cave diving forums to seek out dive buddies who may or may not be safe cave diving buddies/team-mates.

No mentor will conduct visual jumps while diving with you, no mentor will violate prudent/established gas management rules while diving with you. Mentors will pay strict attention to cave conservation and landowner relations at all times when cave diving.

No mentor may guide or mentor you above your current level of certification. This means if you are certified at the Basic Cave level you still may not use the 1/3 rule for gas management and you still may not conduct jumps off of the mainline.

Mentors shall not train you in the use of a DPV. Mentors shall not train you in the use of a sidemount gear configuration. These activities are left to the sole discretion of certified cave instructors.
